Studio Conversions

Space to make things, without renting a unit.

Garage converted into a maker's studio with worktable, desk and tool wall

A studio built around you

Space for the work that doesn't fit at the kitchen table. Designers, photographers, music producers, makers and small business owners get room to spread out, store their kit and work without interruption, without renting a unit.

Power, lighting and flooring are fitted around what you actually do in there.

Every studio starts as a blank canvas: we plan the layout with you at the survey, so the finished room works for your kit and your workflow from the first day.

FAQs

Common Questions

The things people most often ask about a studio conversion.

  • Can you soundproof it for music?

We can add acoustic insulation to the walls and ceiling to cut down the sound that escapes. Full recording-studio isolation is a specialist job, so Harry will talk through the level you need at the survey.

  • I've got heavy or power-hungry equipment. Is that a problem?

No. Power is planned around your kit, including dedicated circuits where they're needed. Bring a list of what's going in there to the survey.

  • Can I see clients there?

Occasional visits are usually fine. If the studio will bring in regular customers or staff, check with your local council, as that can need planning permission.

  • Do I need planning permission?

Often not. Converting an integral or attached garage is usually permitted development, as long as the work is internal and the building isn't enlarged. You may need planning if your permitted development rights have been removed (common on newer estates), the house is listed, or it's in a conservation area. Harry checks this at the survey, before you commit to anything.

  • Does it need Building Regulations approval?

Yes. Turning a garage into a habitable room has to meet Building Regulations for insulation, ventilation, fire safety, damp-proofing and the new window. That's built into every job, through to Building Control sign-off and your completion certificate.

  • What happens to the garage door?

It comes out and is replaced with a new wall on proper foundations, usually with a window, finished to match the outside of your house as closely as possible.

  • How long does it take?

It depends on the size of the garage and what you're turning it into. You'll get a timeline with your itemised quote, and Harry keeps you updated throughout the build.
